Margaret Wente on the collapse of the climage change movement
Excerpts:
And now, the science scandals just keep on coming. First there was the vast cache of e-mails leaked from the University of East Anglia, home of a crucial research unit responsible for collecting temperature data. Although not fatal to the science, they revealed a snakepit of scheming to keep contradictory research from being published, make imperfect data look better, and withhold information from unfriendly third parties. If science is supposed to be open and transparent, these guys acted as if they had a lot to hide.

Despite widespread efforts to play down the Climategate e-mails, they were very damaging. An investigation by the British newspaper The Guardian – among the most aggressive advocates for action on climate change – has found that a series of measurements from Chinese weather stations were seriously flawed, and that documents relating to them could not be produced.

Meantime, the IPCC – the body widely regarded, until now, as the ultimate authority on climate science – is looking worse and worse. After it was forced to retract its claim about melting glaciers, Mr. Pachauri dismissed the error as a one-off. But other IPCC claims have turned out to be just as groundless.

You can't hide from science!

This correlation should not surprise anyone
The more government spends the less money there is for the taxpayers to put to better use when it comes to economic growth.

There is of course some feed back going on here. The higher unemployment goes the more government has to spend in compensation and benefits. However, that doesn't mean that overall spending has to increase; there is always the alternative of better budgeting choices.

Murtha forgets to insert $25 million into hospital
Dies as a result. Hospital officials stated that Murtha promised them $25 million for a new facility to be named after the Congressman so people from Pennsylvania could have their own private rooms if they happened to need care while in the area. "However, he failed to deliver, so we had to turn his machines off," said an unnamed hospital official.

Your tax dollars at work
Is your food licensed?

One mom prepares hundreds of pounds of frozen fruit. The Chicago Department of Public Health says she doesn't have the correct license to make it into candy and sell it. Can she still give it to her son?

Not in Chicago.

Of course not! Didn't you know that giving food away to friends and family requires a completely different license than one that allows you to sell it to strangers?

In a sad struggle that unfolded in a West Town kitchen Thursday night, Department of Health inspectors seized, slashed open and poured bleach over thousands of dollars of local peaches, pears, raspberry and plum purees owned by pastry chef Flora Lazar. She'd purchased the fruit from Green City Market farmers last summer and had planned to use it to make local fruit gelees for her business, Flora Confections.

It's a sad tale that is all too typical when people have to deal with inefficient bureaucracies. Stand in line A for hours only to be told that you should have been in line B where you go stand for more hours only to be told that line A was the right place to begin with.

It's dark humor in fiction but in reality it costs money.
"This puts me out of business for six months," a despondent Lazar said. "I have done everything by the rules. Instead of making the food at home, which I could easily do, I sought out and rented space in a licensed kitchen. When [the city] finally said we could apply for a separate license, I did that. I paid my $600 and invited the inspectors here today."

Of course when inspectors show up they have to prove there is a reason for them to be there. Rarely is anything approved on a first visit. In addition a "message" has to be sent: mess with us and we will make you pay.

You would think the city/state government would be finding ways to, you know, stimulate job growth, right?

Then again, we are talking government revenue here. Never mind that you follow all the strange rules and pay all the outrageous fees. Their mistake is your fault!
Later, though, the department said her clients would all need to apply for their own licenses, and with each application they'd need to get a new health inspection, giving the little niche kitchen exponentially more inspections than the busiest restaurants in Chicago.

Ah, it can never be straightforward with government agencies, can it? Someone always has to show you THEY HAVE THE POWER TO SAY NO. Who cares if your food was prepared under license? That was license A! You silly non-bureaucrat, you need license B! There's always a Catch-22 when it comes to government licensing.

But when Kitchen Chicago users went to the department, they were told again that they couldn't apply for the license because it was at the same address as Leverenz license. The confusion continued for months until recently, Leverenz said, a department representative told her that now he would make sure that renters could apply for the licenses. He further told her, however, that any violations committed by one chef would mean a ticket for every cook who rents space in the facility, meaning possibly thousands of dollars reaped by the city for a minor infraction by one cook the others might have never met.

This is what happens when "good intentions" meets a bureaucracy.

How many businesses have been set back by a bureaucracy that doesn't even understand its own policies? How many jobs were lost? How much money?

Well, those things don't matter. All that matters is you don't have to fear that your neighbor might get away with making candy to sell (or worse, give away) without being properly scrutinized by people armed with bleach and ready to use it.

Take that, free markets!

Obama promises to end the employment of lobbyists
The reality: his administration employs more than forty.
More than 40 former lobbyists work in senior positions in the Obama administration, including three Cabinet secretaries and the CIA director. Yet in his State of the Union address, Obama claimed, "We've excluded lobbyists from policymaking jobs."

Obama's lame excuse? "It could have been more."

Yeah.... Does anyone still think the man isn't one of the worst liars ever to hold the office?

The irony, THE IRONY
It is amusing when people do not consider the full ramifications of their actions. Take, for example, the hysterical reaction from the abortion industry when President Bush tried to expand sCHIP to cover prenatal care:
The Bush administration has drafted a new policy that would allow states to define ''an unborn child'' as a person eligible for medical coverage under the Children's Health Insurance Program.

Federal officials said the change would increase insurance coverage for prenatal care and deliveries, by allowing states to cover pregnant women who are not eligible for Medicaid or the children's health program.

But critics said the change was a backdoor effort to advance the administration's anti-abortion agenda and to establish a legal precedent for recognizing the fetus as a person.

The OH NOES YOU WANT TO MAKE CLUMPS OF CELLS INTO PEOPLE HELL NO RAGE RAGE RAGE reaction he received was typical of the short-sighted people who opposed the policy.

Now fast-forward to 2010 and the same people who raged about Bush are now raging because this isn't policy:
A disagreement is brewing between Nebraska lawmakers and Gov. Dave Heineman's administration about whether pregnant illegal immigrants can keep receiving prenatal care without a significant change in state law.

Nebraska's Medicaid director said Tuesday that a law passed last year that bars illegal immigrants from getting public benefits would have to be changed to allow prenatal care to continue for about 1,000 illegal immigrants. Some lawmakers, however, argue that since any children born to illegal immigrants would be legal U.S. citizens, illegal immigrants won't actually be receiving state benefits under a program they are considering.

OMG RAGE RAGE RAGE WHY NO PRENATAL CARE RAGE RAGE RAGE!!!!

That is, because the state has been illegally ripping off Medicaid to care for the unborn they should be able to do the same with sCHIP...except it's illegal because the RAGE RAGE RAGE crowd prevented it from being legal.

Isn't the irony delicious?

Points of view
It's refreshing to watch libertarians and Republicans react to news of tax cuts with "good!" and "they need better budgeting/prioritization" in the face of economic downturns as opposed to the liberal/statist view that it is a sign of the downfall of civilization when any tax hike is voted down.

The usual doom and gloom scenarios are presented by statists: anarchy will break out and people with concealed carry licenses will gun down women, minorities, the poor and the elderly. Oh, and opposition to any tax increase is the same as advocating no taxes whatsoever. (I know, right?)

Funny thing, though, in the details are poor choices made by government that resulted in the current situations: building movie studios and speculating in real estate (Sante Fe) or operating helicopters and watering non-native grasses to the tune of $1.3 million a year (Colorado Springs).

New leadership will demonstrate that government, like the people who fund it, must operate on realistic budgets and not simply demand more money when they make poor decisions.

Obama: more of the same
President Obama had the past year to demonstrate that he was a different kind of President. He had a year to demonstrate that he had different ideas. He had a year to show that he really did represent change.

Instead what he has given America is more of the same. More debt, bigger deficits, no end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, no closure of Gitmo, no resolution of the issue of gays in the military or gay marriage....

His state of the union speech last week was an opportunity to explain why (or at least how things would change going forward) but instead we were served a mashup of blaming Republicans, the "angry" voters and the previous administration for why his policies have failed.

So instead of hope and change the past year has brought us not just failure but the subsidization of failure at the expense of progress.

The future looks just as bleak with continued deficits on the level not seen since WWII and several times the level of deficits seen during the Bush administration. Coupled with a naive foreign policy that has led to multiple instances of rogue nations embarrassing the Obama administration and you have a recipe for a disastrous four year term for Obama.

One definition of insanity is attempting the same thing over and over again while expecting different outcomes. Obama has spent an enormous amount of money attempting to socialize the American economy with devastating results and yet proposes more of the same for the next few years.

Hopefully the elections in November will put an end to the insanity.

Listen to Mother?
It looks like Mother Jones is doing the work that real journalists used to.

Then again, the MSM would love to keep the likes of Dale Robertson around so they can portray the Tea Party movement as filled with crazy racists.

That's the problem with grass roots movements, especially in the early days. Anyone can claim to be a "leader". Heck, look at organizations like La Raza, which claims to represent "all" Hispanics! The only reputation they should have is the one they earn yet the MSM loves to assign roles and missions so they can play kingmaker (or destroy one).

Yet all they have to do in this case is ask some real Tea Party members about their local organizations and they'd find that people like Robertson have no real followers and do not represent anyone, let alone the entire Tea Party movement.

Keeping the fires burning
The left has attempted to rally their troops by claiming all manner of dire consequences as a result of the Supreme Court standing up for free speech in their recent ruling. Big corporations this and evil corporations that...zzzzzzzz. It's all pretty dull for rallying the troops, especially when people point out that unions are also free(er) to spend their member's dues on politics and corporations already spend a lot of money on politics. There's not going to be a lot of incentive for them to spend so much more money that their profits are affected.

There is, however, one issue that the left knows will always inflame the troops: abortion.

Yep, the left is also claiming that this ruling means the Supreme Court is on the verge of outlawing abortion.

No, seriously, they're really saying that.

Their "logic" goes something like this: the recent Supreme Court ruling overturns previous rulings (precedent) so it shows they are willing to overturn Roe v. Wade. The recent ruling shows that the extreme far right controls the court and so of course the extreme far right's real target has been and always will be abortion. The recent ruling goes "against" a Constitutional right (they're a bit fuzzy on which right that is) so they have demonstrated they are willing to go against the "right" to abortion. The extreme far right values non-people entities like corporations over real people so they of course value the "non-people" entities known as fetuses over real people (women who want abortions). The extreme far right favors slavery so just like the rulings against slavery can/will be overturned they will enslave women by making them all have babies all the time because that's what (extreme far right) men want. (Yeah, I know, right?)

It's kind of sad, really, but it has had its intended affect. The voters who respond with sound and fury whenever the word "abortion" is mentioned have risen up and declared that the Supreme Court will never make them "slaves to men" via pregnancy.

Because freedom of speech has always been about the enslavement of women. :P

Support for Obama plummets: Democrats invent supporters
With popular support for Barack Obama's programs plummeting and the political landscape changing in favor of the Republicans the Democrats have once again fallen back on a favorite tactic of theirs: inventing support.

In this case they've blanketed newspapers with fake letters to the editor. The best part is the Democrats were too lazy to write individualized letters and sent almost identical letters to dozens of papers. In each case the Democrat operatives claimed to be a local resident.

No doubt some organization like ACORN or Organizing for America is behind the fraud. Templates have been found online and readers were solicited to send in "similar" letters. It looks like the robocrats took their orders to heart and sent in "similar" letters to every paper they could find!

This isn't a new trick for the Democrats. They've been front-loading their debates and town halls with Democrat activists for years. Back in the 1996 campaign Democrats posed as Republicans in online forums in an attempt to disrupt the nominating process for the VP, pushing for another center-left candidate to pair with Bob Dole instead of the conservative favorite, Jack Kemp. In one case I exposed a Democrat college professor from Kansas posing as a Republican in several Usenet newsgroups and email listservs.

It's no wonder they think any opposition to them is also an "astroturf" movement: they've been using this kind of deception for decades.

Just more fraud from the party of lies!

Barney Frank seeks to destroy the evidence of his part in the housing bubble
Barney Frank, made acutely aware of his own perilous position as a principal agent in the housing bubble when his partner in crime—Chris Dodd—announced his retirement, is moving to erase the evidence by destroying what is left of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Frank's involvement runs both wide and deep. He backed legislation that forced lenders to expand lending into the "sub prime" arena; used his influence to get jobs for friends and lovers; provided political cover for the institutions when Republicans noticed something was amiss and in the final days accused large Wall Street firms of causing the bubble. These would be the same banks that Frank has pressured over the years to do his bidding.

Ironically, Frank has continued to quote sources like the Wall Street Journal for calling him "crafty", while attempting to cover up the fact it was over legislation that would have made the housing bubble worse!

Old cite by Frank:
Even the hyper-conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page grudgingly termed Frank a "crafty liberal" in a June 14, 2005 diatribe against the proposal to include an affordable housing fund in the pending Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSE) bill that would make changes in the operation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Frank is a leading proponent of the fund.

New cite by Frank:

"[A] crafty liberal... Frank couldn't have written a better bill for the Democrats if he were Financial Services Chairman..."

-- Wall Street Journal Editorial, June 14, 2005 on Fannie Mae legislation

And just what was the WSJ warning about in its editorial?
The economic risk in real estate today is that many people are buying homes they won't be able to finance if mortgage rates rise. This is also one of the dangers of putting so much housing risk in two giant companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac....

Demonstrating that even Barney Frank knows he is guilty!

Republicans, of course, have for years been calling for an end to the Big Government interference that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have come to represent with their Enron-style accounting. Of course they were always opposed in Congress by people like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank, who claimed for years that "nothing was wrong" in the housing market.

Serious butthurt at the White House
President Obama railed against expanded free speech and promised to do everything he could to limit the political speech of any industry that traditionally opposed Democrats.
The White House is working chiefly with Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y, on a bill pushing back on the court decision. The goal is to put forward legislation within two weeks, Van Hollen said Saturday, but the choices are limited by the nature of the court's First Amendment ruling.

Among the options under consideration are requiring the approval of a majority of shareholders before a corporation can run a political ad; requiring the CEO of the company to appear at the end of the ad so the public knows who is behind it; limiting the ad-spending of corporations that have received federal bailout money or that get federal contracts; and trimming down the privileges that come with legal corporate status if companies pump money into political campaigns.

Of course, no such restrictions are being planned for groups which traditionally back Democrats, like unions.

Remember, only Obama should be able to raise $750 million to run for President!

DOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
Holy moley the left is up on arms about the victory for free speech the Supreme Court handed us today. Keith Olbermann, High Priest of Insanity, proved that his corporate masters would shut down his free speech by ranting for well over 11 minutes about how his corporate masters would shut down his free speech.

And slavery. Today's ruling was all about slavery. Because everything and everyone except Keith is racist.

A Random Reagan Quote

"We need true tax reform that will at least make a start toward restoring for our children the American Dream that wealth is denied to no one, that each individual has the right to fly as high as his strength and ability will take him. . . . But we cannot have such reform while our tax policy is engineered by people who view the tax as a means of achieving changes in our social structure."
