Home Ownership: 1982-89

As the below numbers demonstrate, the ownership rate did not change noticably during the Reagan Era, averaging about 64%. Over the past thirty years, rates have stayed in the 63-65% range. Here's a snapshot of the ownership rates at each 10-year census:

Home ownership figures can also be skewed by the public perception of the house as an investment. For example, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, ownership increased in part because people felt owning a home was a hedge against future inflation, despite the fact that declining incomes made it harder to own a home. Conversely, during most of the 1980s declining inflation made home ownership less of an investment, especially with a booming stock market.
