Is anyone surprised?
You shouldn't be. You can't run for President from the far-left (and win).
Don't be surprised when she and her husband come out in support of President Bush's (eventual) plan
to reform Social Security. Bill Clinton is an expert on spinning Social Security. That's how he
defeated Senator Tsongas in the 1992 primaries. He will be a powerful voice in the Social Security
reform debate. So, why would Bill and Hillary help President Bush on this issue? Obviously they
are looking forward to 2008.
It seems obvious (to me), but even Rush missed the point to Bill and Hillary's recent friendship
with the Bush clan. The Clintons are trying to send signals to Republicans that it is okay to
support Hillary. Appearing with Bush 41 and Bush 43 helps them achieve that goal as does Hillary's
recent move to the right on social issues. Hillary can't win without support from the center, and
from socially conservative Democrats. President Bush also needs Democrat support to pass Social Security
reform. If Bill and Hillary can help him do that, he'll use them. Remember, he teamed with
Ted Kennedy on education issues.
Supporting Bush 43 in the political arena will (from the Clinton's point of view) give
Hillary an edge on claiming the political center in 2008. Don't laugh, Bill did it in 1992.
The MSM is already helping Hillary position herself as a "centrist".
It is ironic that the Republicans may lose in 2008 over their reluctance to team up with
President Bush on Social Security reform. The Clintons are savvy politicians. They see an
opening here, and a wedge that gives them an advantage in 2008.
A word of advice to anyone who wants to run in 2008: support President Bush early and often
on Social Security, the war against terrorism and controlling federal spending. Republicans
should follow that advice, Hillary certainly is.
If you think tackling Social Security is scary, just say these words out loud: President Hillary Clinton.
