President Bush has been losing the propaganda war on Social Security reform.
The Democrats are telling everyone that their benefits will go down under the
Bush plan (a lie) and the MSM quotes them and Republicans (out of context) in
such a way to suggest that private accounts will cost $2 trillion dollars to implement.
The truth is, of course, something different. The problem is how to get the
truth out in such a maelstrom of negative attacks.
President Bush is currently touring the country to promote private accounts, but
without a substantial press campaign of their own, the White House is at the
mercy of a liberal media that does not want the truth about Social Security to get out.
President Bush is hurting himself by
not clearly staking out the ground upon which he stands:
Mr. Pence said House conservatives adamantly oppose those options. "We're prepared to
support government's borrowing money to get the fundamental reform of personal accounts.
It's like refinancing your mortgage: You pay points upfront but save a lot more in the long run," he said.
"If we take personal retirement accounts off the table, as Democrats want, we are simply
in the old tax-increase, benefits-cut trap," Mr. Pence said.
President Reagan never budged from his "SDI is not up for negotiation" stance, and
President Bush should not budge from his stance that private accounts are necessary
to save Social Security.
The truth will eventually come out about Social Security. If it is in the next
few months then younger generations will be saved the painful experience of a failed Ponzi
scheme. If it is a few years down the road, then we need to make sure everyone knows
who prevented Social Security from being saved.
