Race Based Admissions: I was right.

Written Summer, 2003

I was right. Again.

Not to dwell too long on the point, but this is yet another issue where clear common sense has won out over the liberal position, again. Even though common sense wins out over liberalism more often than not, liberals still seem shocked when it happens.

This time the issue is racism in college admissions. Today the Supreme Court ruled that using race as a primary consideration in admission is unconstitutional. I cannot say that I am shocked. Anyone who has actually read the Constitution understands that racism is not constitutional. What part of "equal protection" passes the liberals by?

I guess it is time to update one of Ronald Reagan's old sayings. He used to say that a Communist is someone who has read Karl Marx and that an anti-Communist is someone who has read and understood Karl Marx. Today we can say that someone who is a liberal is someone who has read (or perhaps merely heard of) the Constitution, while those who are not liberals have read and understood the Constitution.

In an earlier column, I devastated the argument in favor of the University of Michigan's racist admission policies. In that column, I stated: "You can achieve a goal of greater participation by certain cultural subgroups without resorting to illegal preferences," and today the Supreme Court agreed. "The university's policy, which automatically distributes 20 points, or one-fifth of the points needed to guarantee admission, to every single underrepresented minority applicant solely because of race, is not narrowly tailored to achieve the interest in educational diversity," Chief Justice Rehnquist stated, writing for the majority.

Liberals (and the University of Michigan, of course) are trying to spin this as a victory, if you can believe that. They are trying to state that Affirmative Action has been "vindicated".

Um, no. The debate was never whether the concept of Affirmative Action was legal. No one disputes that. What was in debate was whether the means by which the University of Michigan used to accomplish that goal were legal, and the Court said "no" when it came to their undergraduate admission policy and "perhaps not" when it came to other programs like the graduate and law schools. That is most certainly not a victory, unless...perhaps liberals were expecting a much greater loss?

The Supreme Court again ruled the concept of using a racist tool to "cure" racism unconstitutional. One does not cure racism by swapping the skin color of the alleged victims and alleged oppressors. This seems to be very clear to everyone except liberals. What exactly do they not get? Either discrimination based on skin color is wrong or it isn't. You cannot reasonably argue the issue one way and then another because you find yourself first on one side of the issue and then another.

Once again, we are reminded that the true goal of liberals is not a more diverse society, but a society that they control. Moreover, they want to use any means necessary to achieve that, and will put forth all manner of "well-intentioned" programs that mask their true intent, like trying to claim that racism in the name of Affirmative Action is okay.

Sorry liberals, you lose. Again.

It is time to remind those well-intentioned school administrators at all levels that this is what happens when you try to use shortcuts instead of dealing with the sometimes hard work of achieving a goal like a racially diverse student body.

I will repeat my advice that I gave last time on this subject. (I hope the appropriate people are more receptive this time.)

First of all, start with recruiting. Are you sending well-managed recruiting teams to high schools throughout the state? Do you have famous graduates helping in the recruiting process? What about advertising your breadth of programs and opportunities? Testimonials from current and past students? All of those can increase participation.

And if you truly believe that certain cultural subgroups are 'disadvantaged' in the K-12 system, then help fix the K-12 system instead of perpetuating an illegal system because you think the ends justify the means.

Yes, that is harder than simply awarding every member of racial group X extra points, but it is the right way to do it. People in the education field should understand the difference between the right way to do something and the quick and dirty (and illegal) way to do it.

I was right. Again.
