Recalls and Democracy

Written September 28th, 2003

What is a democracy? In general, democracy is a form of government where the people choose their leaders and/or decide what laws will be enacted. A democracy can be in the form of a Republic, like the United States, a direct democracy, such as ancient Athens, or even a Constitutional Monarchy, like the United Kingdom. The main point is that the people decide who will rule. So how can anyone say that the people deciding to recall a representative is "undemocratic"? Well, they can say it, but it simply isn't true.

Which brings us to the Democrats. For the past twenty five years (give or take a couple of years) the Democrats have been turning to propaganda. Given the choice of debating issues on their merits and using lies and half-truths they have chosen to deceive.

The primary reason Democrats have chosen to use propaganda is that they realize they are on the wrong side of the issues. Since they cannot win in a legitimate contest of ideas, they have to try and make people think the ideas of their opponents are far worse than they really are. The secondary reason is the lust and love for power. As the saying goes, power corrupts, and the Democrats held power at the Congressional level in Washington for over four decades with few interruptions. That is a lot of corruption!

To the dismay of Democrats, President Reagan swept into power with a program of less government. For a party that has based its existence on the idea of an ever-expanding nanny state, the very idea of less government is horrifying. Democrats had it bad enough when they were faced with a Republican President and Senate. For Democrats, it was worse when the people of the United States chose to have a Republican House and Senate in 1994. Now the party of less government controlled the agenda where laws and regulations were made.

Democrats could not logically say that the people choosing to elect Republicans was undemocratic, so they turned to propaganda. Republicans were said to have "seized power". Similarly, when President Clinton broke the law and was impeached, Democrats wailed that Republicans were trying to "overturn an election". And in 2000 when the Supreme Court ruled that having different standards for counting votes was unconstitutional, Democrats tried to spin it as a coup d'état. Now the people asking for a vote on whether the governor of California should be recalled is being portrayed by Democrats as yet another attempt to "overturn" democracy. Sadly, many Democrats think they are stating the truth when they repeat this kind of propaganda.

Fortunately, most voters see right through the Democrat propaganda. They understand that when they vote on something, it is democracy. When their chosen representatives vote on something, it is democracy. And when a judge tries to overturn something that voters (or their representatives) have decided, that is not democracy.

The recall, initiated by voters, will be decided by voters and not the courts or the press or any other entity. This is democracy in action. If the people elected to rule on behalf of the voters could not be recalled, then our democracy would be incomplete. Without a recourse to remove incompetent or criminal rulers, voters would be powerless to stop tyrants before they could do more harm.

Nor do the voters have to present life-threatening issues to justify a recall. In a democracy the voters decide whether a recall initiative has merit. If they think that someone should be recalled over policy, scandal or criminal behavior that is their right. Those who try to deny the voters this right are the ones arguing against democracy, and in favor of tyranny.

So to those who will vote on October 7th, I say bravo! You are exercising your right to choose your leaders, and sending a clear message to those who think that a democracy is where the government decides when and where the rulers and rules change. That message is: "you work for us, and we can fire you any time we wish". No wonder the Democrats are terrified.

...democracy is a form of government where the people choose their leaders and/or decide what laws will be enacted.
