Resign or be Impeached

Written Autumn, 1998

I can't help but notice the parallels between our sitting President, Bill Clinton, and a bank robber caught red-handed.

First there are the ongoing, ever-present delay tactics. Like a well-oiled criminal defense lawyer, Clinton claims that "there's nothing there, there." Excuse me? For someone who's been under investigation since they day they took office, how can one credibly claim that for all the smoke, not a single fire exists?

Of course, that's the key. Keep claiming that there's nothing there; delay; obstruct; and then use the length of the investigation to claim your opponents "have nothing" and are merely "wasting taxpayer money". I suppose we could blame the media for not pointing out that it is Bill Clinton himself who has drawn out the multiple investigations into his administration these six years, but they've been willing fellow travellers on this path of deception.

Now that we finally have an admission of guilt (oops, his lawyers and supporters are now claiming a lie is not a lie...) we should move forward with his removal from office. Far from being "merely a lie about sex" what Clinton has done is one of the worst things a President can do to the American people: lie to them under oath. Yet like the bank robber caught red handed Clinton wants to redefine what a crime is.

Ken Starr is certainly a hero in this whole mess. It's too bad there weren't more people like him (and Linda Tripp) in Nazi Germany. When a sizable minority of people (say, the 40% who keep electing Clinton) put themselves and their political leader ahead of the good of the country, the country is in deep trouble.

For those of you who have forgotten that this is merely the latest scandal, let's review the reasons why Bill Clinton should resign or be impeached:

  • Whitewater. Shady land dealings. Stealing from government loan funds. Embezzlement. Lying under oath. Tax evasion. Several people have already served their jail sentences for this criminal activity. One has died (a common occurrence for Clinton associates when the house of cards comes falling down), taking with him accusations that Clinton "knew everything" and "lied under oath".

  • Travel Office. Unfair firing of career employees so Clinton could reward his partners in crime from Arkansas with cushy deals. Slander and libel of said employees. Siccing the IRS on said employees. Abuse of the power of the Office of the Presidency

  • Filegate. Obtaining over 1000 files on Republicans. Charles Colson went to jail for looking at one file. Where are the Democrats who looked at these files and why aren't they in jail?

  • Campaign Finance. Clinton and Gore have routinely flouted the laws of this country with regards to campaign financing. Putting themselves above the law, they have even accepted contributions from known drug dealers, Chinese government agents and in one stellar case of "no controlling legal authority" hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who had taken vows of poverty.

  • Partners in Crime. Virtually every nominated Clinton official for the administration has either been criminally investigated, convicted, denied appointment, or resigned under fire. Two have escaped the consequences of their actions through death.

  • Health Scare. Under the guise of revamping America's health care system Bill and Hillary Clinton set about to seize one seventh of the American economy and place it under the control of several more government bureaucracies. Hillary broke several laws with regards to holding meetings in private and Ira Magaziner lied to the courts about who was employed in this failed attempt to socialize medicine.

  • Using the IRS as a weapon. All major organizations who have criticized Clinton, or those individuals who have done their jobs investigating the myriad Clinton crimes have had the IRS sicced on them and undergone lengthy and arbitrary examinations of their financial pasts. This abuse of the power of the Office of the Presidency continues despite ample evidence that Bill Clinton himself has evaded taxes in the past.

  • Criminal negligence with regards to the military. Clinton has sent under-armed, under-trained military personnel into harm's way so he can score points with the United Nations and socialist supporters. The United States military exists to destroy threats to the nation, and Clinton has turned it into a "meals on wheels" program that can't fight it's way out of a paper bag. The brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day deserve better than a "Commander in sleaze" who uses them as hired thugs enforcing partisan political goals.

No doubt Clinton's next move, like the bank robber who knows he's guilty, but thinks banks are there to rob, will be to claim he's being persecuted for trying to do good. Yep, he was going to give that money to the poor. To women. To the elderly. And now those mean, evil police...err...Republicans...are going to try and put him in jail for being nice.

This disgusting display of ego has got to stop. America is suffering because of one man's ego. Those who are defending Clinton are only making matters worse. They are arguing that laws don't matter, that morality doesn't matter. Nothing matters if you claim to be doing good.

It's scary that Clinton and his supporters are starting to sound like defenders of an absolute ruler. Jail those who oppose you! Anyone investigating the supreme ruler is evil! The sooner the House starts Impeachment proceedings, the better. Remember when a Republican was in the White House? The same people suggesting that we let Clinton off the hook are the ones who cried that "even the appearance of impropriety" should result in removal from office.

Bill Clinton has done considerable damage to the office of the presidency. His co-dependent supporters are making matters worse by insisting that he alone is repsonsible for all that is good in America. The truth is both far from Bill Clinton and his supporters.

No one is above the law.

No one.

For someone who's been under investigation since they day they took office, how can one credibly claim that for all the smoke, not a single fire exists?
